Idido has become a prominent community in the specialty coffee scene. Located in the Aricha municipality, Idido is a community of various smallholder producers each tending 1 or 2 hectares of land. Idido has ideal conditions for coffee growing–heat, humidity, elevation, soil composition–but the infrastructure to manage the plants and transport the cherries to washing stations is rough.
In Ethiopia, coffee varietals are typically blended together as they are numerous and often wild. On most bags you might see “Ethiopia Landrace,” or “Heirloom” which is to say that it’s a blend of unidentified indigenous coffees. However, this lot from Idido has specifically separated Kurume, Daga and Wolisho varietals. Each has its own characteristics, but with only three instead of dozens or hundreds, those qualities shine through and define the flavor profile.
